4-H & Youth Development Extension Agent
Good Morning 4-H Members, Families & Volunteers!
We are officially back into one of our busier times of year with lots of fun, educational and exciting opportunities happening throughout the County, Northern District and State 4-H Program! I want to take this time to encourage everyone to participate in one local event and District/State event. It does not have to be a contest, but even an educational learning opportunity. There are so many wonderful opportunities that are available to 4-H members, that it would be a shame to miss out on these life enhancing occasions. If you are interested in participating in a contest or an educational event, but do not have someone from your club to compete or attend with, give me a call! We have 243 members, which gives me confidence that we can find someone to compete with you or go to an event with! If there is anything that I mention in these emails, and you would like more information about, give me a call and I will be more than happy to answer all your questions. Make sure that you are getting the fullest experience out of your 4-H career that you can J
With that encouragement in mind, the registration for our County Contest Day has been created and can be found here: https://virginiatech.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_aWXo08Xy3Ja4ECN. County Contest will take place on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Government Center. The four contests that County Council voted on to facilitate during County Contest Day are:
How to decide if you’re doing public speaking versus a presentation? Public Speaking is just YOU. No props, no PowerPoints, no posters. Presentations have something that is visual besides you. This can be either a demonstration or an illustrated talk and includes props, costumes, slides, ect. For example, Why Nutrition and Health Matter would fist best as a public speaking topic, while Examples of Nutritious Foods with tangible examples of food would be a better presentation as an illustrated talk. How to Pick a Horse’s Hoof would be better as a demonstration with a model hoof, but Effects of Poor Hoof Management on the Horse Industry would be better as a speech.
Competing at the local County Contest Day is a great way to prepare members to advance to District and State Competitions. It’s also a great way to practice speaking in front a large group, which is something everyone will have to do at some point or another, either through other organizations, class presentations, job interviews and often times through your career.
Below are some other events that are happening at a larger level that members can participate in:
