Good Morning 4-H Members, Families & Volunteers!
I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend and a great week last week. Due to the thunderstorms and tornado watch that we had on Monday, we had to cancel the County Council Meeting last minute. I have looked over my schedule and room availability and have decided to not reschedule the May County Council Meeting as the earliest I could do would be the week before our June County Council meeting. Therefore, members have an additional month to work on their designs for the 70th Annual 4-H Fair that will go on the T-Shirt, Catalog and Fair Program.
Since we will not get to have our May meeting, we will have a lot to go over in our June Meeting. Drinks and snacks will be provided, so please plan on attending and supporting our County 4-H Program! I will also offer a WebEx Conference Call In for those that are not able to join us in person.
Otherwise, I do not have any new news to report on, so please check out the new and exciting opportunities for our 4-H members to participate in and please feel free to give me a call if anything looks interesting to you and your family that you would like more information on!
Celebrate Fairfax! Festival.
We have been offered to have a booth at this year's Celebrate Fairfax! Festival. This year's Celebrate Fairfax! Festival will be held June 8th, 9th and 10th. We will need to have volunteers at the booth at all times, so if you are interested in helping with this event, please email me as soon as possible so I know whether to keep the booth space or let it go to another organization that could use it.
June is Dairy Month
This year's Dairy Month theme is "How Do You Love Your Dairy?" To show your love for the Dairy Industry, participate in the annual Dairy Month 4-H Poster Contest and submit your poster to the 4-H Office by Monday, June 4th. The top three winners in each age category will then go on to State Congress! Please see the attached poster for more information on the poster and note: County Winners will receive more than ribbons, we will have special awards for the top three individuals in each age category! I can't wait to see your creativity

Virginia 4-H has been working in Brazil with schools and communities to conduct CHARACTER COUNTS! Training and other opportunities since 2004. It all started in Joinville, Santa Catarina with two school systems impacting 5,000 teachers and 70,000 students. Over 1,700 teachers, principals and community leaders have been trained and training is offered every two years. Joinville Schools reported that since implementing CHARACTER COUNTS! there has been a decrease in violence, verbal abuse, and swearing among students. Furthermore, students are more responsible as well as respectful to their peers and teachers. Volunteerism is not a strong concept in Brazil, but since the implementation of CHARACTER COUNTS!, parents are volunteering more in the schools. In addition to the CHARACTER COUNTS! Training in Brazil, other training sessions such as True Colors, Advanced CHARACTER COUNTS!, Learning Styles and Classroom Management, and Conflict Management have been conducted with the school personnel. There has been a judge’s exchange and a teacher’s exchange giving us the opportunity to share our 4-H Positive Youth Development Program and our culture with others. The work in Brazil continues to grow and evolve in additional opportunities for 4-H Positive Youth Development. Unfortunately, the Brazilian economy has declined over the years and it is difficult for our Brazilian colleagues to secure funds to support their efforts. Over $9,500 is needed for training, facilities, supplies, posters, participant breaks, pins, certificates and posters to ensure their continued growth. This is an opportunity for us to make a connection between our 4-H Clubs and youth in Brazil. If your club is interested in donating at least $10 or fundraising, please let Krystal know. Even if every club donated at least $10 we could donate about $150 towards their needs and assist them in getting the funds to support their efforts in CHARACTER COUNTS! And 4-H Positive Youth Development.
