If you enjoy the outdoors and hunting, you’ll love the shooting sports project! This project covers firearm safety and teaches responsible handling and use. Get ready because this project is hands on. You’ll learn about a variety of firearms – including pistols, rifles, shotguns, muzzle-loading, and even archery!
Some groups focus on competitive events, and others practice basic shooting programs. Contact your local club to see what’s available in your area.
In the shooting sports project, you’ll learn:
  • how to load and shoot a variety of firearms
  • proper maintenance of your firearms, parts, and accessories
  • proper safety procedures in handling and shooting
  • about shooting sports competitions and how to participate
  • hunting procedures
  • laws and ethics related to shooting, hunting, and firearms use
  • about careers related to firearms and shooting sports!
Due to the nature of this sport, there are quite a few rules that are detailed and important to follow. But remember, fun and safety are the primary goals. These rules should be applied to any activity and event within 4-H Shooting Sports project; these rules supercede those posted in governing bodies such as NRA, USA Archery, NSCA, etc.

Contests

Shoot Match Program September 2018 Age Divisions:

For BB: Junior competitors only. Eligible to shoot in the match if born anytime in 2004 [13], 2005 [12], 2006 [11], 2007 [10], January through September 2008 [9]

For Air Rifle Silhouette, Air Pistol Silhouette, Air Rifle 3P, Smallbore Rifle Silhouette, Light Rifle, Match Rifle, Inline Muzzleloader, Traditional Muzzleloader, Trap, Skeet, Target Sprint, and all Archery: Seniors were born anytime in: 1998 [18+], 1999 [18], 2000 [17], 2001 [16], 2002 [15], 2003 [14] Juniors were born anytime in: 2004 [13], 2005 [12], 2006 [11], 2007 [10], January through September 2008 [9]

For Smallbore Pistol Silhouette and Smallbore Pistol Modified Camp Perry Round: Seniors competitors only. Seniors were born anytime in: 1998 [18+], 1999 [18], 2000 [17], 2001 [16], 2002 [15], 2003 [14]

4-H Shotgun Championship
All participants must furnish proof that the 4-H Shotgun Portfolio has been completed prior to entering this event. For copies of the portfolio, go to the website listed on the event flyer. By entry in this event, the team coach is verifying that the youth entered are knowledgeable and proficient in the safe use of the equipment and the fundamentals of the event. Participants are expected to be familiar with the rules and conduct of the events in this competition. Coaching will not be allowed on the fields.
